who we are

Austin and Jaxson Symons

I gave birth to Austin & Jaxson on June 29, 2013 at 26 weeks gestation and the boys have remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ever since due to extreme prematurity and numerous complications. At 17 weeks, I was hospitalized for two months due to placenta previa and during this time received 17 blood transfusions. I was transferred to Foothills Medical Centre antepartum unit a month prior to giving birth and have remained in Calgary since. I have a room at the Ronald McDonald house for myself and one of my other children as he's 6 and needs to be with mom while my other son is in Red Deer staying with his older Step-brother. My husband is currently working in Fort Mac as he lost his job in Red Deer, due to taking too much time off.

Both boys have chronic lung issues requiring ongoing respiratory support and Austin also has a grade 4 intracranial bleed which will likely lead to developmental issues. Their medical status was very fragile, particularly in the beginning of their stay and we have been faced with making many difficult decisions along the way. Due to continued complications and slow development, the boys are expected to require further inpatient care for the at least the next couple of months.

The foundation has been an enormous help in providing financial support to cover numerous unexpected expenses such as travel back and forth from Red Deer, accommodations while staying in Calgary along with additional medical and baby supplies for the boys. Our family is very thankful to be associated with the Sarah Faith Hogan Memorial Foundation.
