who we are

John Michael

Hayden is currently a patient of Dr Steven R Martin in the Gastroenterology Clinic at the Alberta Children's Hospital as he underwent a liver transplant on December 12, 2013 for acute liver failure. Hayden was born on May 28, 2013 after an uncomplicated pregnancy and birth. His father was an international student at St Mary's College while his mother, a hair dresser was on maternity benefits.

Hayden's symptoms of vomiting and yellowing eyes were first noticed in the last days of November. He was brought to the emergency department at the Children's Hospital where he was diagnosed with acute liver failure and would require a liver transplant. This news and the subsequent immediate need for a liver donor sent the lives of Hayden's parents into chaos. The Nguyen family had to relocate to the Stollery Hospital in Edmonton (temporarily) where the liver transplant took place.

Hayden's father became the living donor for Hayden and therefore had to take a leave from his studies. Hayden's transplant was received successfully, however his recovery has been a challenging one with ongoing changes to his medications and nutrition to ensure he does not reject his new liver. Due to these changes, the day to day expenses have substantially increased for this family.

Hayden's dad being an international student is not able to work in Canada and mom's EI benefits aren't able to cover their monthly necessities, nevermind the added expenses due to Hayden's condition.

Unfortunately, Hayden's medical condition has devastated this family financially and therefore emotionally. The Foundation has approved this family and is currently covering their rent for the next couple of months along with some basic necessities to help carry this family through this incredibly challenging time.

The Nguygen family is very thankful for the support of the foundation
