who we are

Mason, Keira & Eli Carruthers

My name is Candace; I gave birth to Eli, Mason and Keira on September 28th, 2013 at 29 weeks and 2 days gestation. My babies were delivered by emergency caesarean after an ultrasound revealed that my baby Mason was in medical distress as he was having reverse blood flow in his umbilical cord and his amniotic fluid levels were low. Throughout my entire pregnancy he had severe intrauterine growth restriction.  There was a good chance that he wouldn't survive if he spent any longer in utero. They were born at Foothills Medical Centre and were admitted to the NICU due to extreme prematurity and chronic lung issues for both my girl Keira and my boy Mason, which require continuous respiratory support.

At birth, Mason weighed 585 grams, Eli was 1315 grams and Keira was 1420 grams.  My boy Eli was lucky enough to escape any lung issues however he had bilateral inguinal hernias that were corrected by surgery at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and he recovered okay thanks to the amazing surgeon, doctors and nurses that cared for him.  Mason also has bilateral inguinal hernias and will have his surgery when he’s a bit bigger.  Mason will be followed by the Neonatal Transitional Care Team because of his birth weight and he will also be followed by the Neonatal Follow-up Clinic at the Alberta Children’s Hospital where they will monitor his neurodevelopment in his early childhood years. Although this has been an extremely stressful time, I'm so very thankful that my babies are alive and I'm also thankful for the care that they have received by some amazing doctors and nurses in the NICU, without their help my babies wouldn't be here.

The Sarah Faith Hogan Memorial Foundation has been a HUGE help in providing financial assistance for many expenses including accommodation, travel back and forth to the hospital, medical supplies and baby supplies.  The assistance came at such a time of need and I’m extremely grateful to be associated with the foundation.
