who we are

Carmen Delahay

Carmen is an 8 month old baby girl who has spent 100+ days of her life in the hospital. Carmen was only recently diagnosed with Central Core Disease, a disease which has resulted in significantly decrease muscle strength and tone. At this point Carmen remains in the hospital as she requires assistance with breathing and is unable to take any nutrition orally.

During her stay she has had MANY set-backs and complications from various procedures. It is unknown when Carmen may be well enough to go home. She was admitted (again) to the Alberta Children's Hospital on April 21 and there does not appear to be any discharge planned for the near future.

Carmen's mom Amanda is a stay at home mom to Carmen and her older 4 1/2 year old sister Mya. Carmen's dad, Adam works as a warehouse supervisor in Airdrie. He does his best to put in a full day of work, spend time with Mya and get to the hospital to be with Amanda and Carmen. This hectic schedule has not been easy to maintain. Due to her precarious condition Amanda is not able to leave the hospital for any length of time to get home and be with Mya.

As would be expected, Mya has had difficulty understanding why mom is not home and has trouble understanding why mom has to leave on the few occasions. The often unexpected and extended hospital stays have created a considerable financial stress for the family. The cost of gas to and from Calgary and the cost of parking at the ACH alone have been difficult for the family to manage. Even once discharged Carmen will have long-term complex needs that will require numerous visits to the ACH.

The Foundation graciously helped us out with costs to set up our home for Carmen’s homecoming and also help us pay for the extra costs related to travel back and forth to the Hospital.
